Dental implants

A dental implant is a titanium screw that your dentist inserts into the jawbone to replace one or several missing teeth. Replacing missing teeth is important because it can prevent bone loss, tooth migration, and problems with chewing and digestion.

Why choose dental implants?

Dental implants offer several advantages:

  • Look just like a natural tooth root.
  • Are a more conservative treatment option because they don't rely on adjacent teeth, unlike permanent bridges which require neighbouring teeth to be shaved down
  • Allow you to regain full chewing function, stimulate the bone and prevent neighbouring and opposite teeth from shifting.
  • Are a suitable option to secure dentures for patients who have lost all their teeth

How dental implants are installed

At the initial implant consultation, Dr. Costisella will start by checking your teeth. Then she'll discuss the various treatment options with you.

If you lost your teeth several months ago, a 3D X-ray may be taken to make sure you've got enough bone mass to support a dental implant. If you don't have enough bone mass, Dr. Costisella may recommend a bone graft.

What does the procedure involve?

  • After local anaesthetic is administered in the target area, the dentist installs the titanium implant in your mouth.
  • Over time, the titanium screw fuses with the jawbone.
  • Once integrated, the implant can be fitted with one or more artificial teeth, which are called implant-supported crowns.

Caring for your implant

Just like natural teeth, implants need to be cleaned regularly with a toothbrush and dental floss. Our staff will let you know how to do it properly.

Are you a good candidate for dental implants?

Dental implants aren't for everyone. The prerequisites are:

  • Be in good general health
  • Have healthy gums and good oral health
  • Have a sufficiently high and wide jawbone to support the implant, otherwise a bone graft will be required
