Wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are located right at the back of your mouth. These teeth were very useful when people ate mostly raw meat. But as humans evolved and began cooking meat, our jaws started to shrink. Now, when wisdom teeth erupt—typically between the ages of 16 and 19—they often remain impacted or semi-impacted. They can then cause all kinds of problems such as:

  • Periodontal pockets and bone loss around second molars, which we want to keep healthy
  • Food getting stuck between teeth
  • Infections, abscesses or cysts
  • Odontogenic tumors

Wisdom tooth extraction

Not all wisdom teeth need to be extracted. However, if your wisdom teeth are problematic, your dentist will recommend removing them as soon as possible, ideally between the ages of 16 and 20. That's because the tooth root isn't completely formed yet, which lowers the risk of complications. Also, young patients recover from surgery more quickly.
